Notary services are now available at the Holliston Public Library free of charge. Before requesting an appointment at the bottom of the page, please review the guidelines listed below.
Per MGL Chapter 222 section 17E no deed or real estate related documents (closing documents, etc.) will be notarized at the library.
The following guidelines will be followed in the provision of notary service:
- Notary services are available during the normal business hours by appointment only.
- A valid, government-issued photo identification is required of any individual seeking notary service. Proper forms of identification include state ID or driver’s license issued in the U.S., Mexico, or Canada; U.S. passport or military card; or foreign passport validated by INS.
- The document(s) should NOT be signed or dated until the signer is in the presence of the notary. The notary cannot witness your document if it is signed before being in the presence of the notary.
- All signers must be present at the time of notarizing.
- If the document requires a witness(es), he/she/they must be present.
- The notary is merely stating that he/she has witnessed the document being signed and cannot offer any legal advice.
- The document must contain the appropriate Notarial Statement or Clause, otherwise, one will be attached to the document by the notary.
- Documents in any language other than English will not be notarized at the library.
- Notary service is not available for deeds, mortgages, wills, living wills, living trusts, codicils, or depositions. (These documents are best handled at law or real estate offices.)
- Certain public documents cannot be copied and notarized as being “official/certified” documents. Examples of these are passports, birth, marriage, and death certificates. Official certified documents (birth, marriage, and death certificates)—with appropriate Town Seal—can be obtained from a Town Clerk’s office.
- Massachusetts law requires that a notary and the person seeking notarization be able to communicate directly with each other.
- In accordance with Massachusetts Notarial law, notaries will not provide service if the individual making the request, the document, or the circumstances of the request for notary service raises any issue of authenticity, ambiguity, doubt, or uncertainty. In any of these events, the notary may, at his/her sole discretion, decline to provide notary service.
- If your document requires an unaffiliated witness, you will need to supply that witness.
